By now, you should have decided on a niche and created the actual Instagram account. Now it’s time to fill out the profile and make it more attractive to potential followers. You need to think of the profile like a job application. The better you present it, the higher the chance that someone will follow you.

Find an appealing Instagram username

Let’s start with the account’s username. This is arguably one of the most important aspects of an account and if you get it right, it can really boost your follower rate later on. Think about it, would you be more likely to follow an account named @BestCars or @2021_car.boss_?

Most of the best usernames were picked up years ago, but there are still some good options out there. I like to use tools like LeanDomainSearch or Shopify’s Business Name Generator to get name suggestions and then see what’s available on Instagram. While I would recommend staying away from underscores and periods, they are fine as a last resort.

Use keywords in your name

If you have an account in the fashion and lifestyle niche, it would be highly recommended to use these exact keywords in your name. When users search for the keyword, your profile may well come up. Besides, it also shows users what to expect on your profile.

Choose a suitable profile picture

You also need to have a great profile picture. Depending on your niche, you can have a simple image (like a landscape or a relevant product) or you can use a logo. I wouldn’t worry about a logo until your account has grown a bit. Remember that your audience will be mostly on smartphones, so your profile picture should be easy to read and understand. Don’t use your personal photo for a brand or business account.

Your bio represents your IG account

Always make sure your bio is informative, brief, and references your niche. You don’t want the average user to invest more than 30 seconds to understand the purpose of your account. Use call-to-action commands like “click here” to get “XYZ”.

Here’s an example from one of my accounts:
